Changing the Mental Health Mindset for 18-24 Year Old Males

DoD’s Real Warriors is a public awareness campaign for encouraging service members, veterans, and families to seek help for psychological health. As few warriors like to show weakness, it was imperative to meet these audiences where they are. Applying principles of health promotion to relay actionable campaign messages online, I helped reach a variety of audiences including service members (Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, National Guard and reserve, veterans), military families, and health care providers. In two years my plain language editing, online content management and coalition building promoting the campaign’s integrated media activities (e.g., podcasts, PSAs, real-time Q&As, NFL Game Day events and media tours) led to a 1,460 percent increase in online engagement and established the campaign as one of the most mentioned and recognized brands in the military space.

During my time supporting the Real Warriors Campaign, my plain language and health communications work was recognized in the Shorty Awards Finals, American Journal of Public Health, PR News’ Public Relations Hall of Fame and the industry Communicator Award.
